COACH TODD

Coach Todd Miklas’ journey in martial arts began in his early teens when he started training in Isshinryu Karate-Do under the guidance of Gary Castanza at Universal Martial Arts Academy. Under Gary’s mentorship, he was introduced to Zen Sekai Goshin Jitsu, a unique blend of Japanese Jujitsu and Aikido. After Gary’s passing, Todd continued to refine his skills in this style, laying the foundation for his diverse martial arts career.

Upon relocating to Clearwater, Florida after high school, Todd trained with John Ingram at Ingram’s Okinawan Karate-Do. John, a traditional Karate-Do Master and top-ranked professional Kickboxer, played a pivotal role in Todd’s transition into competitive martial arts. It was here that Todd first began competing in various tournaments, blending Kickboxing strategy with his martial arts foundation.

In his early 20s, Todd returned to Buffalo and further expanded his martial arts repertoire, training and teaching under Bill Adams at the Bill Adams Martial Arts Dojo. Bill, a nationally and internationally recognized martial artist, exposed Todd to a wide variety of fighting styles, including Judo, Aiki-Jujitsu, Kempo, Goju, Arnis, and Tai Chi. This diverse training provided Todd with a deep understanding of martial arts beyond Karate-Do and helped him grow as both a competitor and instructor.

As his passion for teaching grew, Todd realized his love for working with children. After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy from SUNY Buffalo, he pursued a Master’s in Teaching at Canisius College, followed by a second Master’s Degree in Education Administration. Over nearly 30 years as an educator, Todd taught in various schools, from inner-city and rural districts to Catholic schools. He also founded and hosted Karate-Do Clubs at each school, inspiring students to embrace martial arts, balance, and self-improvement.

Six years ago, Todd’s oldest son’s interest in boxing led him to give it a try, despite his deep-rooted background in traditional Okinawan martial arts. Initially skeptical, Todd quickly fell in love with the “Sweet Science” after training at KC’s Boxing and meeting Coach Kevin Cunningham. Todd was so captivated by the sport that he trained six days a week and eagerly began coaching, feeling the same sense of pride he had when he received his first black belt 35 years ago.

Today, Todd continues to train and coach, sparring and developing future fighters. His passion for both teaching and boxing is evident in his commitment to his own training, coaching others, and inspiring the next generation of fighters. As co-owner and coach at Momentum Boxing, Todd brings a wealth of experience, dedication, and love for the sport to every session.
