Q: Do I have to be in good physical shape to participate or do I need to get in better shape before I begin?

A: Absolutely not. We work with you where you are at. Each person comes to us with a different work out background and abilities, if not other martial arts training. So, we look to develop an individual training plan for each participant to get you comfortable with routines, see what you can do or how far you can sensibly go, and build momentum with you, from where you are at.

Q: What are the health benefits of training in boxing or taking boxing classes?

A: Boxing can help improve your heart health, body composition, and strength, as well as lower your blood pressure and aid weight loss.

Q:. Will I get punched in the face or hit in any way?

A: Not at all! Our classes are carefully structured to ensure safety and control. Any partner drills are clearly explained, conducted at a controlled pace, and use training tools like focus mitts—so there’s no risk of accidental contact.

If, after building a solid foundation, you're interested in sparring, that's completely optional. Even then, it's done with proper coaching, mutual respect, and full safety gear to ensure a safe and supportive environment.

Q: Will I have to spar anyone at any point?

A: Again, absolutely not!  Sparring is reserved for a higher level of training with advanced students.  There are separate classes for sparring and it will never occur during a regularly scheduled weekly class.  If any member chooses to participate in sparring sessions, this would be approved by either Coach Todd or Coach Cammie.  While we feel that sparring is really the ultimate progression to learning the Sweet Science of boxing, it is truly not a part of the fitness boxing side of training.

Q: What does an average boxing class look like?

A: Classes run for an average of 60 minutes.  The first 10 generally involve some version of “warm ups” to get everyone stretched, loosened up, and the body focused for class.  The next 40 minutes involve 3 minute rounds with a 1 minute break after each, representative of an actual boxing match.  Boxing exercise activities, commonly called “drills,” will vary from individual whole class exercise or partnered drills. Commonly newer members will be paired with a novice or advanced partner, so that you can best learn correctly.

Q: How long does it take to become good at boxing?

A: The rate at which participants advance truly is based upon frequency of attending classes and/or a person's level of commitment to training.  We recommend attending minimally 2-3 classes per week  At this level of participation a member can expect to see significant personal growth both skill set wise as well as physical health improvement in 2-3 months.  Typically, after a year of training, members can explore the option to begin light controlled sparring.

Q: What if I am interested in getting extra help with my training, do you provide one to one instruction?

A: We offer one to one private lessons at a scheduled convenient time for any member.  The rates vary depending on the frequency of such training sessions in a month (once a week, twice a month, once a month, etc.) and can range from $30-$50 per hour.  If interested, it is best to consult with either Coach Todd or Cammie to see what works best for you and where you are at or what you need in your training regimen.

Q: Is there a lot of equipment needed for boxing? How much does the equipment cost?

A: To get started we recommend normal work out clothing that feels comfortable for you.  For work out shoes, we recommend something that is more flat soled.  You can pick up boxing shoes or wrestling shoes, but truly any sneaker will work.  Boxing gloves are sold at the gym for $30 and wraps are $20.  There are gloves you can find that range from $30 to well beyond a $100, depending on style, material, namebrand, etc. To get started, we highly recommend beginning with the RDX we sell.

Q: What if I have an ongoing physical recurring injury or physical limitation?

A: Any person who has a chronic or recurring injury/physical limitation, should consult with Coach Todd or Coach Cammie to help in designing exercise modifications.

Q: I am not a very coordinated person, is this an exercise program for me?

A: Boxing may be possibly the actual best option of an exercise program which works to develop coordination, body control, body strength, and serves an excellent compliment to many other sports.  The key to developing coordination is through isolation of specific body mechanics, the progressive adding of more complex movements, and all under the use of a considerable repetition of “drills.”

Q: What if I decide I want to take a month off of place my membership on hold?

A: At Momentum Boxing we believe there is no need for contracts.  Once you experience our classes and gym we are confident you will want to make this a consistent part of your workout routine.  If by any chance you do need to take some time off or wish to put your membership on hold, just speak with Coach Todd or Coach Cammie who will be happy to assist.

Q: I have children and was curious if there are options for them to take classes at the same time or is there somewhere they can wait while I am in class?

A: We have youth/teen classes that are scheduled at the same time for students ages 11-16 years olds who run parallel to adult classes, by design.  Coach Cammie runs one and Coach Todd runs the other.  There is also a comfortable waiting space for children who may not want to train.

Q: I am interested in self defense for myself, my kids, or my college student, does boxing help with this?

A: Boxing not only provides excellent health benefits, but improves self confidence as many of the drills and strength training drills have practical applications to street self defense.  Coach Todd has instructed in various martial arts for the last 40 years too, in which in many of his classes he breaks down particular responses to various scenarios.  In addition, monthly self defense seminars will be hosted to focus specifically on self defense techniques in isolation, free of charge!
